Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla is one of the most significant figures with alleged ties to Mexican drug cartels ever extradited to Illinois, said Randall Samborn, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago.

Zambada’s father, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, also is considered a top leader of the Sinaloa cartel and is among Mexico’s most-wanted suspects.

Zambada-Niebla, 34, was indicted in August as part of a far-reaching case alleging that Mexican drug traffickers imported several tons of cocaine and other drugs into the Chicago area. The network allegedly used planes, boats and cars to ship drugs from Colombia through Mexico into the U.S., with much of the distribution system centered in Chicago’s southwest suburbs. (more…)
